It's never too late to be re-parented...

I wrote the book Proverbs for Kids because there is so much wisdom in the book of Proverbs. I can't think of a better book to teach kids about how to live well in this world. Consider, for example, the following verses:

“My son, obey your father’s commands,

and don’t neglect your mother’s instruction.

Keep their words always in your heart.

Tie them around your neck.

When you walk, their counsel will lead you.

When you sleep, they will protect you.

When you wake up, they will advise you.” Proverbs 6:20-22 (NLT)

If you are a parent, you are probably glad to read this passage to your children. I mean, who doesn’t want their kids to listen to them? Surely, you want them to be surrounded by your guidance and instruction. But how does this apply to you as an adult?

If your parents taught you wisely, I’m sure there are myriad ways you can apply this Scripture. Did your dad tell you to work hard? Did your mother teach you to be kind to your friends? If so, those are the kinds of things that never leave you and that mold the way you do things today. Sometimes their voices in your mind help you to work your way through difficult situations.

However, what if your parents were neglectful and didn’t teach you wisely? Most of us can point to ways our parents failed us. Don't despair if that's the case, because the good news is that you can be re-parented by God. How? You have a God who has asked you to call him "Father," and he's given you his Word that is full of wise commandments and teaching. He’s also given you his Holy Spirit to live within you and guide you moment by moment in applying those teachings—something your earthly parents could never have given you, no matter how good they were.

Write down one way you wish you could be re-parented. Do you wish you were more disciplined? Do you wish someone had taught you to be more patient? Do you wish you’d had a better example in how to keep your temper? Do you wish you'd learned how to conquer your fears?

After you’ve picked that one thing, look up everything the Bible has to say about that quality (do a word study using a concordance or something like When you’ve completed that study, memorize at least one verse that you found and ask God to work that quality into your life.
