How to transform suffering...

January 7, 2015

When life is tough, it's hard to imagine what we have to be thankful for. As I hit those rough spots, it helps me to read what people in the Bible were thankful for. It's often very different from what I think should make me burst into praise.

For example, Paul was thankful for God's presence when he was in prison. David was thankful for God's protection when he was being pursued by Saul. And Moses praised God for delivering his people from a tyrant. This is what he says after escaping Egypt's armies:

“You raised your right hand, and the earth swallowed our enemies. With your unfailing love you lead the people you have redeemed. In your might, you guide them to your sacred home.” Exodus 15:12-13 NLT

Exodus 15 is Moses’s song of praise for God’s amazing feat of parting the Red Sea. Can you imagine how astounding that must have been to those who watched it? Trapped at an impassable river with the most powerful army on earth coming straight at them, they must have felt it was all over when the unimaginable happened. No wonder Moses burst into praise!

And what does he praise God for? Here are a few things he mentioned:

  • His great power

  • The strength he gives us

  • His commitment to his people

  • His victory over enemies

  • His majesty

  • His righteous judgment

  • That he is holy and awesome in splendor

  • His great wonders

  • His unfailing love and guidance

  • That he will reign forever

The astounding thing is that the same God who parted the Red Sea has chosen to come alongside you and walk with you each day. Therefore, all of the things Moses praised God for are also available to you.

Write your own song of praise to God. Include the things mentioned above and add in events from your own life when you’ve seen his mighty hand. You will be amazed how it changes your attitude.
