Paralyzed by fear?

In my mystery, Summerville, Tim must learn to conquer his crippling fear. It was easy for me to write about that because I've had to fight that battle too. It started when I was a child and was taught about Stranger/Danger. Once that idea was rooted in my head, I looked at everyone with suspicion and saw "evil" men everywhere.

It wasn't until recently that I was able to break that paralyizing fear. But now that it's broken, I am experiencing freedom that I'd lost since I was about eight years old.

It helps me to know that I'm not the only one who has struggled with this. Even Moses, a great hero of the faith, fought fear, as we see in Exodus 6:

"When the Lord spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt, he said to him, 'I am the Lord! Tell Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, everything I am telling you.' But Moses argued with the Lord, saying, 'I can’t do it! I’m such a clumsy speaker! Why should Pharaoh listen to me?'"

Moses certainly didn’t feel fearless when God asked him to come against Pharaoh, the most powerful man in the world. Moses had no confidence that he was up to the task. Evidently, like most of us, he had a fear of public speaking—multiplied since God asked him to speak to someone who could end his life with a word.

To give Moses courage, God promised that he’d give him a spokesperson in Aaron. This may have comforted Moses until he heard the rest of God’s plan—that he would harden Pharaoh’s heart so that he’d refuse to listen to Moses. What a challenge! In essence, God told Moses that he was giving him a task doomed to fail so miserably that God, himself, would have to step in and remedy it.

But the reason we see Moses as a fearless leader today is because of the courageous faith displayed in Exodus 7:6, “so Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord had commanded them.”

What is God asking you to do? Is fear keeping your from doing it? If God is truly in it, he will step in and display his power and glory. All you have to do is obey.
