Everything you've learned about life is wrong...
In my fairy tale book trilogy, The Land of Neo, the main character, Ella, learns that the things she has valued in life are not always what they should be, which reminds me of the Beatitudes.
The Beatitudes, which Jesus taught in his Sermon on the Mount, turn everything topsy-turvy. They could easily be titled, "Everything you've learned about life so far is wrong." Jesus blows us away by telling us it's good to be poor, to mourn, to be meek, and to be persecuted. Even crazier is the fact that these things can make us happy!
Most of us have been told all our lives to work hard for comfort and ease, to have a positive attitude, and to assert ourselves. When we read Matthew 5, it forces us to re-evaluate the entire premise for our lives, which is exactly Jesus' aim. Read these words and ponder them today:
~Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
~Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
~Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
~Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
~Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
~Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
~Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
~Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
After pondering these words of wisdom from Jesus, reflect on what has truly made you content and happy in your life. Is it these things, or those things that you elusively chase after?
